Jury Awards Millions To Woman Wrongly Pursued By Debt Collectors

A big win for the little guy as a jury unanimously agrees that one of the most malicious and large debt collectors in the United States was found guilty, to the tune of $83 million.

“On February 6, 2013, my husband came to my place of employment and handed me the lawsuit Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC had served him with at our home. They wanted me to pay them over $1,000. I did not owe this company any money. My husband and I were already struggling just to keep our children fed and the lights on. The lawsuit terrified me. I feared they would take my house and I feared they would arrest me. The jury outlined that Portfolio Recovery Associates LLC, a massive debt buyer, had acted with cruel intentions against Maria Guadalupe Mejia that caused significant suffering. Although you can almost guarantee that Portfolio Recovery Associates will legally dispute the ruling, it still serves as a righteous indicator that the people don’t need to take this kind of abuse from debt collectors in the future.
