Thought to chew on for the day!
Question:
Who covers the fines and civil pay outs when the rare occasion does take place and a police officer is indicted for their criminal behaviour, misconduct, abuse, etc?
Answer:
In 99.8% of the cases the taxpayer has covered the over $700 million dollars worth of settlements.
A study on Police Indemnification, NYU Law Review.
Joanna C. Schwartz tracked over 9,000 settlements from around the USA and found that no police officer ever took financial responsibility for their misconduct. Imagine maiming someone being arrested, charged and found guilty for the act and then having the taxpayer step in and say “not to worry my friend, we have you covered!”
I know this is a very touchy subject for many of you who have loved ones who serve and protect this great nation, but nonetheless we still need to acknowledge the facts.
What are your thoughts on your hard earned tax dollar being put toward police indemnification?
