This short video was made for UK youth support hotline Childline. It depicts that feeling different is a common experience and urges kids to reach out for help if they’re struggling with isolation or any other problem.

When I think back to my elementary school years, I was constantly afraid in life and felt like no one understood me. It appeared to me that everyone else seemed to have things figured things out. This constant unnecessary comparison between others outside appearances and facial expressions with my own never seem to serve me well, as I seemed to always come up short. I never felt I would be good enough at whatever I put my mind to. It was bondage, and a lie that I didn’t fully face until my mid-twenties, and by that time it had already caused catastrophic damage in my life.

If only I had someone who took me under their wing and let me know just how normal it is to feel so out of place all the time. We all mature and grow at different a varied pace. The myth that there is a normal out there needs to finally be smashed. You are loved. You are safe, and there are a lot of people who care about you out there. Don’t ever hesitate to reach out when you are feeling low. I guess that is my message, and after watching this video I assume it is also theirs.

There is nothing wrong with being different from other people. But if feeling different is making you feel isolated or upset, then there are things you can do to feel better.
